Lead in Water
Lead in drinking water is a real concern for breastfeeding mothers because lead does transfer into breast milk. If you live in an older home or area with known lead pipe issues, filtering your water is an important step.
Lead crosses into breast milk, and infants are especially vulnerable to lead's neurodevelopmental effects. If your home was built before 1986 or you are in a community with known lead pipe infrastructure, use a water filter certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for lead removal, or use bottled water. Run your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water if you suspect lead pipes. Breastfeeding is still recommended over formula (which requires mixing with potentially contaminated water), and a good filter addresses the issue at the source.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
