Ketogenic (Keto) Diet
The keto diet while breastfeeding carries a real, documented risk: lactational ketoacidosis. While rare, this dangerous condition has been reported in breastfeeding mothers following very low-carb diets. If you want to eat lower-carb, a moderate approach is much safer.
Breastfeeding itself is metabolically demanding and creates a mild ketogenic state. Adding a strict keto diet (typically <20–50g carbs/day) can push some nursing mothers into severe ketoacidosis — a dangerous buildup of ketones in the blood. Multiple case reports have been published of otherwise healthy breastfeeding mothers hospitalized with lactational ketoacidosis while following keto diets. Signs include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, and fruity-smelling breath. If you want to eat low-carb, aim for at least 50–100g of carbohydrates per day and ensure adequate caloric intake (minimum 1800 cal/day).
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
