Kava
Kava should be avoided during breastfeeding. It has been associated with liver toxicity and has no breastfeeding safety data. Kava compounds transfer into breast milk.
Kava (Piper methysticum) is used recreationally and medicinally for its sedative and anxiolytic effects. Kavalactones transfer into breast milk. Kava has been associated with rare but serious liver toxicity (hepatotoxicity) โ the FDA issued a liver toxicity warning. No breastfeeding safety data exists. LactMed recommends avoiding kava during lactation.
