Juniper Berries

Juniper berries used sparingly in cooking (a few berries in a stew or sauerkraut) are likely fine, but larger medicinal doses should be avoided while breastfeeding. Juniper has traditionally been used as a diuretic and uterine stimulant, and concentrated juniper preparations lack safety data for nursing mothers.

Juniper berries contain volatile oils including terpinen-4-ol, which has diuretic properties. In folk medicine, juniper was used to promote menstruation and as a urinary tract antiseptic — uses that suggest hormonal and physiological activity that could theoretically affect breastfeeding. Small culinary amounts (3–5 berries in a braise or sauerkraut recipe) are not a concern. Juniper berry supplements, juniper essential oil, and juniper tea in medicinal quantities should be avoided.
