Hydrocortisone Cream

Hydrocortisone cream is safe during breastfeeding. Topical application results in minimal systemic absorption, so little to none reaches breast milk.

OTC hydrocortisone 1% cream has very low systemic absorption when applied to intact skin. Amounts reaching breast milk are negligible. Safe for short-term use on rashes, insect bites, and skin irritation. If applying near the nipple or areola, wipe off gently before nursing. Prescription-strength topical steroids may have slightly more absorption — ask your provider.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
