Honey (Safe for Mom)

Honey is completely safe for breastfeeding moms to eat! The no-honey rule is for babies under 12 months eating honey directly — it does NOT apply to what you eat.

Myth: Many moms think they need to avoid honey while breastfeeding because of the infant botulism risk. This is incorrect — the restriction is only for babies eating honey directly, NOT for what mom eats.

Infant botulism is caused by Clostridium botulinum spores in honey being ingested directly by babies. Your digestive system destroys these spores before they can cause harm. Botulinum toxin and spores do not pass into breast milk. You can enjoy honey freely — just don't give it directly to your baby until after their first birthday.
