Hair Relaxers / Chemical Straightening

Hair relaxers and chemical straightening treatments should be used with caution while breastfeeding. The chemicals (formaldehyde, sodium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide) can be absorbed through the scalp and inhaled as fumes. Ensure excellent ventilation during treatment. Formaldehyde-based keratin treatments are the most concerning — look for formaldehyde-free options.

Some keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts release formaldehyde gas when heated, which is a known carcinogen and respiratory irritant. Even products labeled 'formaldehyde-free' may contain methylene glycol, which releases formaldehyde when heated. Traditional relaxers using sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide are caustic but have less systemic absorption concern than formaldehyde-releasing treatments. If getting any chemical hair treatment, ensure the salon is well-ventilated, avoid treatments during the baby's first few months, and consider formaldehyde-free alternatives.
