Goat Cheese

Goat cheese is safe to eat while breastfeeding! The soft cheese restriction from pregnancy doesn't apply anymore.

Myth: Soft goat cheese was a pregnancy restriction, not a breastfeeding one. You're free to eat it after your baby is born.

Fresh goat cheese (chèvre) was restricted during pregnancy because soft cheeses can harbor Listeria. After delivery, Listeria bacteria can't cross into breast milk and harm your baby, so this restriction lifts immediately. Pasteurized goat cheese — the most common variety sold in the US — is particularly safe. Enjoy it.
