Gluten-Free Diet

A gluten-free diet is safe while breastfeeding. If you have celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, continuing your gluten-free diet while nursing is absolutely appropriate and recommended. Gluten does not transfer into breast milk, and there is no strong evidence that a breastfeeding mother avoiding gluten prevents celiac disease in her child.

If you have celiac disease, maintaining a strict gluten-free diet is essential for your own health and to avoid intestinal damage. For those without celiac or gluten sensitivity, a gluten-free diet is simply a personal dietary choice — it is neither harmful nor beneficial for the breastfeeding baby. Watch for potential deficiencies in B vitamins, iron, and fiber that can occur with poorly planned gluten-free diets (many GF products are less fortified than their wheat counterparts).

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
