Fish (Allergen Concern)

Fish is safe — and actually encouraged — while breastfeeding! The FDA recommends 2-3 servings of low-mercury fish per week. Fish allergy concerns shouldn't keep most nursing moms from eating fish.

Fish is a top-8 allergen, but that doesn't mean breastfeeding moms need to avoid it. Fish proteins can pass into breast milk, but reactions in nursing infants are rare. The nutritional benefits of low-mercury fish (especially omega-3 DHA from fatty fish) are significant for infant brain development. If your family has a strong history of fish allergy or your baby shows allergic symptoms, talk to your pediatrician.
