OTC Eye Drops

OTC eye drops — both artificial tears and decongestant eye drops — are safe during breastfeeding. Ophthalmic absorption is minimal and systemic levels are negligible.

Lubricating eye drops (artificial tears) contain only saline and lubricants — no active drug concern. Decongestant eye drops (Visine with tetrahydrozoline) have very low systemic absorption when used as directed. No adverse effects on breastfeeding infants have been documented. Use nasolacrimal occlusion (pressing the inner corner of the eye after instilling drops) to further reduce any systemic absorption.
