Dextromethorphan (Robitussin)

Dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in Robitussin and many cold medicines, is considered safe during breastfeeding at recommended doses.

Dextromethorphan transfers into breast milk in small amounts but no adverse infant effects have been documented. The Infant Risk Center and LactMed classify it as compatible with breastfeeding. Use plain formulations without pseudoephedrine or antihistamines when possible. Stick to recommended doses — high doses can cause maternal CNS effects.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
