Dang Gui / Angelica Root
Dang gui (dong quai) is one of the most used herbs in Chinese postpartum recovery, prized for tonifying the blood. However, it has mild estrogenic activity and some blood-thinning properties that warrant caution while breastfeeding.
Transfer into breast milk has not been well studied. Its mild estrogen-like compounds could theoretically affect milk supply. Some preparations also contain alcohol. Use only under the guidance of a knowledgeable Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, and let your midwife or OB know you're taking it.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
