Clove Essential Oil

Clove essential oil is another 'hot' oil that requires caution while breastfeeding. It's high in eugenol, a potent skin irritant and sensitizer. Avoid topical use during breastfeeding — it should never be applied to or near the breasts. Brief diffusion in a ventilated room is generally acceptable, but don't use it around your baby.

Clove essential oil contains 70–90% eugenol, which is a strong mucous membrane irritant. It has antiplatelet properties similar to aspirin and should be avoided in mothers with bleeding disorders or taking blood thinners. Topical use can cause chemical burns on sensitive skin. The culinary spice (ground cloves) used in normal cooking amounts is completely safe — this caution applies only to the concentrated essential oil.
