Cigarettes (Tobacco Smoking)
Smoking is harmful, but breastfeeding is still strongly recommended even if you smoke — breast milk's benefits outweigh formula for smoking moms. The goal is to reduce smoking and protect your baby from secondhand smoke.
📉Nicotine suppresses prolactin and reduces milk supply and milk-ejection reflex.
Nicotine and other tobacco compounds pass into breast milk and peak 30–60 minutes after smoking. Breastfed babies of smoking mothers may be fussier and have shorter sleep cycles. However, breastfeeding still provides significant protection against SIDS, respiratory illness, and other risks — benefits that outweigh the risks of formula for smoking mothers. Reduce smoking as much as possible, smoke outside and away from the baby, smoke after nursing rather than before, and never smoke in the same room as the baby. Quitting is the ideal goal.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
