Carbonara
Carbonara is safe while breastfeeding! The raw egg concern is a pregnancy restriction — while breastfeeding, foodborne pathogens from undercooked eggs don't pass through breast milk.
Myth: The raw/undercooked egg restriction applies during pregnancy, not breastfeeding. Salmonella does not pass through breast milk.
Traditional carbonara is made with pasta, guanciale (or pancetta), egg yolks, Pecorino Romano, and black pepper. The eggs are not fully cooked — they're emulsified into a creamy sauce by the pasta's residual heat. During pregnancy, raw eggs are a Salmonella concern. During breastfeeding, Salmonella doesn't transfer through breast milk, so carbonara is safe to enjoy.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
