Calorie Restriction

Strict calorie restriction while breastfeeding can decrease milk supply and deplete your own nutritional reserves. Most experts recommend a minimum of 1800 calories per day while nursing, and more if you are very active.

📉Insufficient caloric intake is one of the most common dietary causes of reduced milk supply.
Your body prioritizes milk production — but supply can be affected when caloric intake drops significantly below needs. Gradual, modest calorie reductions of 300–500 calories below your total daily energy expenditure are generally safe and won't dramatically affect supply for most mothers. Very low-calorie diets (under 1500 calories) are strongly discouraged while breastfeeding. The postpartum period is not the time for aggressive dieting — focus on nutrient-dense foods and allow gradual weight loss at a pace of no more than 1–1.5 lb per week.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
