Caffeine (Baby Sensitivity)
Moderate caffeine intake (up to 300mg/day, about 2–3 cups of coffee) is safe while breastfeeding. Only about 1% of your caffeine dose appears in breast milk, and at moderate levels, this amount is well tolerated by most babies. Newborns metabolize caffeine more slowly, so be more conservative in the first few weeks.
Up to 300mg/day (2–3 cups of coffee); less in first few weeks postpartum
About 1% of maternal caffeine intake transfers to breast milk, peaking 1–2 hours after consumption. Newborns have a very long caffeine half-life (65–130 hours) that decreases to 3–7 hours by 3–5 months of age. At moderate maternal intake, the dose to the infant is very small and well below levels used therapeutically in premature infants for apnea. If your baby seems unusually fussy or wakeful, try reducing caffeine for a few days to see if it helps — some babies are more sensitive than others.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
