Black Cohosh Supplement

Black cohosh should be avoided while breastfeeding. It has estrogenic and hormonal effects that could theoretically suppress lactation, and there's concern about rare but serious liver toxicity. There is insufficient safety data for nursing mothers, and the potential risks outweigh any potential benefits during lactation.

Black cohosh is primarily used for menopausal symptoms and acts on estrogen receptors. During breastfeeding, hormonal modulation can interfere with prolactin-driven milk production. Additionally, case reports of hepatotoxicity (liver damage) associated with black cohosh have prompted safety warnings from several regulatory agencies. The German BfArM and Australian TGA have both issued warnings. LactMed recommends avoiding it during breastfeeding.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
