Benzoyl Peroxide (Topical)
Benzoyl peroxide is a widely used topical acne treatment that is minimally absorbed through the skin. Small amounts used on the face are generally considered acceptable while breastfeeding. The key caution: avoid applying it to the breast area, where it could transfer directly to baby during nursing.
Topical benzoyl peroxide is largely converted to benzoic acid in the skin and systemic absorption is very low. LactMed considers it likely safe when used on the face or other non-breast areas. Do not apply to the chest or breast area. Wash hands thoroughly after applying. If you are treating chest acne, speak with your provider about alternatives.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
