Baked Goods with Poppy Seeds
Poppy seeds in baked goods are safe while breastfeeding, but in very large quantities they can potentially cause sedation in babies. Normal portions — a muffin or bagel — are fine.
Normal culinary amounts (a muffin, bagel, or slice of cake) are fine; avoid poppy seed teas
Poppy seeds contain trace amounts of morphine and codeine from the opium poppy plant. Culinary amounts used in baking are generally safe, but extremely large quantities (tablespoons of unwashed poppy seeds) have caused sedation in breastfed infants. A poppy seed muffin or bagel falls well within safe territory. Poppy seed tea or unwashed poppy seeds in large amounts should be avoided.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
