Vitamin B12

B12 is essential and passes into breast milk — deficiency in nursing moms can cause serious neurological problems in their babies. Especially critical if you follow a plant-based diet.

Vegan and vegetarian breastfeeding moms are at high risk for B12 deficiency. Infants exclusively breastfed by B12-deficient mothers can develop severe neurological damage. B12 is naturally found only in animal products. Supplementation with methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin is safe and highly recommended for plant-based moms and those with absorption issues.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
