Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is a popular adaptogen for stress and sleep, but it hasn't been adequately studied in breastfeeding women. Most providers and LactMed recommend avoiding it during lactation.
Ashwagandha has real physiological effects as an adaptogen — it affects cortisol, thyroid hormones, and the immune system. While generally safe for healthy non-pregnant adults, its safety during breastfeeding is not established. LactMed notes insufficient data and recommends caution. Traditional use in Ayurveda actually lists it as having galactagogue properties, but modern safety data is lacking.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
