Anise
Anise seed has galactagogue properties similar to fennel and is used in lactation teas. Culinary amounts are safe; high-dose concentrated extracts are not well studied.
📈Culinary amounts traditionally used to support milk supply.
Like fennel, anise contains anethole, which has estrogen-like effects and may support milk production. It's commonly used in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Culinary use is considered safe. Concentrated anise oil or high-dose supplements are not recommended. Star anise (a different plant) should not be given directly to infants — it has caused neurological harm in babies.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
