Ammonia (Cleaning Products)

Ammonia-based cleaners are effective glass and surface cleaners but have pungent fumes that are irritating to the respiratory system. As a breastfeeding mother, the concern is fume inhalation rather than breast milk transfer. Use in well-ventilated areas, keep baby out of the room, and never mix with bleach.

Ammonia does not significantly absorb through skin to affect breast milk. The hazard is inhalation — ammonia fumes are a respiratory irritant. Keep windows open, wear gloves if you have sensitive skin, and keep your baby and other children out of the area while cleaning and for a few minutes after. Critically: never mix ammonia with bleach — the combination produces toxic chloramine gas.
