Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) Diet

The AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) diet — which eliminates grains, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades, and legumes — is very restrictive and requires careful nutritional planning while breastfeeding. If you have an autoimmune condition that warrants this approach, work with a registered dietitian to ensure you're meeting caloric and nutrient needs for lactation.

The AIP diet eliminates most major food groups, making it challenging to meet the increased caloric (400–500 extra calories/day) and nutritional demands of breastfeeding. Key nutrients at risk include calcium (no dairy), protein variety, iron, and several B vitamins. If your autoimmune condition genuinely improves on AIP, the benefits may justify the dietary restrictions — but this should be done under medical supervision with nutritional supplementation as needed. The elimination phase should be as short as practical, with systematic reintroduction.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
