Adderall (Non-Prescribed / Recreational)
Non-prescribed amphetamine use (including recreational Adderall) should be avoided while breastfeeding. Amphetamines transfer into breast milk and can cause irritability, agitation, poor feeding, and sleep disturbances in your baby. If you have a legitimate ADHD prescription, talk to your doctor — prescribed low-dose use may be manageable.
Amphetamines concentrate in breast milk at levels higher than maternal plasma. In recreational or high doses, this poses real risks to the nursing infant including irritability, poor sleep, reduced appetite, and in severe cases, cardiovascular effects. The AAP lists amphetamines as drugs of concern during breastfeeding. Prescribed therapeutic doses of amphetamines (for ADHD) are handled differently — discuss with your prescribing physician and pediatrician.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
