Adaptogens (General)
Adaptogens — herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola, reishi, and holy basil — are trendy for stress management, but most lack adequate safety data for breastfeeding. While they've been used in traditional medicine for centuries, concentrated supplement forms may have hormonal, immune-modulating, or other effects that haven't been evaluated in nursing mothers. Discuss with your provider before using any adaptogen while breastfeeding.
The term 'adaptogen' encompasses a wide range of herbs with varying mechanisms of action. Some (like ashwagandha) may affect thyroid hormones. Others (like reishi and chaga) modulate the immune system. Many interact with medications. The lack of standardized dosing and the supplement industry's loose regulation add additional uncertainty. Food-level intake of some adaptogenic herbs in traditional cooking is different from taking concentrated supplement capsules. When in doubt, eat the herb in food form rather than taking supplements.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
