Activated Charcoal
Avoid activated charcoal while breastfeeding. It can bind to nutrients and medications in your gut, reducing their absorption — which can affect both your health and the quality of your breast milk.
Activated charcoal is a porous form of carbon used medically to treat poisoning by absorbing toxins in the gut. The problem is it's indiscriminate — it also absorbs vitamins, minerals, and medications you need. Regular use during breastfeeding could reduce absorption of key nutrients like folate, vitamin B12, and iron, affecting milk quality and your own recovery. It also absorbs oral medications, potentially making them ineffective. There's no evidence that 'detox charcoal' products provide benefits, and the risks are real.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
